What to look for in snowboarding jackets

Snowboarding jackets are an essential part of dressing for snowboarding. But what makes certain snowboarding jackets better than others and what should you look for when purchasing your jacket?

The two most important areas that separate mediocre snowboarding jackets and expensive high grade snowboarding jackets are the amount of venting and protection from moisture. Less expensive jackets tend to have little to no venting features as well as no extra waterproofing. More expensive jackets go to great lengths to provide you with a well ventilated jacket that keeps all unwanted moisture out. Higher quality jackets are made out of waterproof materials such as Gore-Tex while the lower grade jackets are just coated with a waterproof coating that wears off with time.

Venting refers to the ability to release extra warmth as well as the breath ability of the material. Better snowboarding jackets will have extra zippers near the armpit, chest, and back to release that extra unwanted heat your body gives off on a warm day or after a hike up the pipe.

Other things to look for in snowboarding jackets are extra pockets and pouches for storing everything from your goggles to your lunch. Hoods are also great additions, especially the fully removable ones. The construction of the jacket is also important. There are many jackets that offer built-in insulation and many that don't. If you are the type that always seems to be cold, you may want to look into a jacket with extra insulation.

Snowboarding jackets are the one piece of snowboarding apparel that you will be wearing constantly throughout the season. This also means that it is probably the single most important piece of clothing as well. So don't skimp out on your snowboarding jacket and make a good investment.
