Snowboard Reviews Home > Sims Snowboards Great snowboarding history: Sims snowboardsSims snowboards are the product of one 13 year old boy's dreams. Tom Sims, the founder of Sims snowboards, first came up with an idea for a board he could ride in the snow back in 1963, when he was just 13 years old. Sims was an avid skateboarder and hated the long winter months when he couldn't be out skateboarding. This is why, despite his young age, Sims convinced his shop teacher to help him create a board he could ride in the snow. Although his first board bears little resemblance to what modern snowboards look like, it was still a great step in the evolution of snowboards as well as one young boy's dreams. Tom Sims founded Sims snowboards in 1977 along with Chuck Barfoot. They began making snowboards in Sims' garage and came up with the "Flying Yellow Banana", a skateboard deck on top of a plastic shell with skegs. Tom had finally realized his dream of boarding in the winter and began to supply the world with the product of his passion. Sims snowboards soon became one of the largest, most popular brand of snowboards in the world. To this day, Sims snowboards have a great following with fans that wait anxiously each year for the new models and designs. Sims Sports Inc., which was the company behind the boards, has since been sold to the Huffy Corporation, which has continued its history of providing quality snowboards for the avid snowboarding fans.
